Dear Ashley,
I just have to tell you how much I am loving your story, and working with your story. I had a stepmother, just like you—and I even had two stepsisters! Fortunately, they weren’t quite as insufferable as yours (if you don’t mind me saying - I don’t know what your relationship is to them, now, but clearly you’ve made peace with the idea of writing about them.) In response to your note about snarkiness, I appreciate the insight and think I will just leave it in.
Also, I read the girdle essay and enjoyed it very much. I was wondering if you've ever read Professor March’s articles about sibling rivalry and parental favoritism in mythology? I’ve founds such interesting things about step-families while Googling her. Some of her thoughts have really helped me sort out what happened to me. I’m also curious about the work you do, if you ever would like to elaborate.
Lyrically (writer-to-writer), I also wanted to tell you I'm certainly inspired by your phrasings and descriptions; keep up all the good details! I've attached some song lyrics to this letter. Hmm, I hope this personal correspondence doesn’t alter your storytelling. But I guess the fact I’m writing to you this way is a testament to the fairy tale itself: Cinderella is an archetype for us all to reflect on and learn about ourselves.
Warmly,
Kristen

Dear Kristen,
I actually really appreciate your personal connection to my story; thank you for writing what you did. I am still in touch with Sylvia, who has had quite the spiritual awakening since those dark days. Believe it or not, she actually is very excited about the musical. There are so many kids who live in families where parents are abusive and controlling and obsessive—and most of them are never hurt badly enough to need attention from CPS. I really want to tell my story to support those kids, the ones whose families look “perfectly nice” from the outside but are painful to live in. Sylvia now sees how her behavior (and untreated mental illness) in those days hurt her, too.
But of course I’ve also changed their names! “Hill” was Jeff’s idea, since he sees me as quite volcanic and different from them….
No, I have not seen Professor March's work on step-families, but I will look for it. She is strangely prolific (as if there are two or three of her), and quite well-known in academic circles. Sometimes I stumble across articles that astonish me, and often at just the time when I need them.
Thanks also for your kind words about my writing. More chapters attached!
Best,
Ashley
